Tokyo-based artist JUN INAGAWA’s Magical Destroyers is the culmination of a vision that began in his high school years. Created in collaboration with director Hiroshi Ikehata and Bibury Animation Studios, the anime tells the story of the Otaku Hero and three magical girls fighting against a society that seeks to suppress otaku culture. The narrative explores themes of individuality, passion, and resistance, set against the backdrop of a reimagined Akihabara—a symbolic hub for fandom and creativity.
INAGAWA has always been fascinated by people who unapologetically love what they love, whether it's anime, music, or science. This fascination inspired the story's central question: What happens when someone’s favorite things are taken away? The answer is a bold, chaotic rebellion aimed at reclaiming the freedom to express oneself. INAGAWA’s personal experiences—such as growing up in California, discovering anime and manga overseas, and visiting Akihabara for the first time in 2011—heavily influenced the anime’s creation. He notes that the Akihabara depicted in Magical Destroyers is not just a reflection of the real place but also a manifestation of the wonder and excitement he felt when first encountering it.
The anime is deeply personal, packed with references to the creators’ own interests and influences, from classic anime like STEINS;GATE, FLCL, and Mind Game to the vibrant UK music scene. INAGAWA’s artistic style has evolved over time, blending the cuteness of early Japanese character designs with the edgy aesthetic of street culture. His love for music, especially artists like The Chemical Brothers, plays a significant role in shaping his creative process. He compares composing a drawing to creating music, with each layer contributing to the overall story.
For INAGAWA, Magical Destroyers isn’t just an anime—it’s a celebration of self-expression and individuality in an age where personal interests are often suppressed. The show serves as a reminder to embrace what you love unapologetically. With its high-energy storytelling, nostalgic nods to otaku culture, and a heartfelt message about passion and creativity, Magical Destroyers invites viewers on a roller-coaster ride through the vibrant world of fandom and rebellion.
